7 Ways to Boost Your Energy At Work

There it is again, the sight you’ve come to dread: an overflowing in-box, 300 unopened emails, and an office that looks like a tornado just hit.

Just the sight of this mess on a Monday morning at 7:15 am has you feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, defeated and already behind the 8-ball.

You wonder how you got here. To this place where “being behind” is the new norm.

You were the one who was always on the top of your game. You ran circles around your co-workers. You were the master at getting things done.

You want to regain that energy and be back in the driver’s seat. You want the satisfaction of getting stuff done. You want to feel good about your accomplishments. And when you go home you want to still have some energy left over to have a life.

Well, don’t worry, because you can get that energy back.

Here’s the seven simple tactics I use to boost my power, and to stay energized at work:

1. Jumpstart Your Power

Sitting at a desk all day is not good for your health. In fact, it can be just as dangerous as being a smoker.

Too much sitting can contribute to being overweight, developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, anxiety and depression. With sitting being such a drain on your health what can you do to jumpstart your power instead?

Make it a point to stand up, at least every hour, to keep your blood flowing. Add a walk into your day (even 5 minutes will get some momentum going).

Just moving can release stuck energy and a stuck mind, increase problem-solving capabilities, boost confidence, focus concentration and increase your overall productivity.

In fact, scientists at Stanford say that walking increases your level of creativity 60 percent.

2. Forget Quick Fuel

When your energy is low it’s tempting to grab a quick pick-me-up like a sugary snack or another cup of coffee.

The trouble with some sugary snacks and caffeine is that they give you a quick boost, then a quick dive.

For longer lasting fuel try energy producing snacks instead like nuts, dried fruit, eggs, or pumpkin seeds (to name a few).

3. Tap Your Power Source

Stress can cause a tightening of your chest muscles and shortness of breath.

Remembering to take deep breaths or using a 5-minute mindful breathing practice can be calming, reduce stress, and can clear your mind.

Adding a mantra like, “I have all of the energy I need to get everything done that needs to get done” is much better than telling yourself “I’ll never get all of this done!” and having it become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

With just a few minutes of mindful breathing you will have energized your body and tapped your power source for getting more done.

4. Stay Supercharged All Day

What happens when your car battery doesn’t have enough water?

According to a Northeast Battery post, “Knowing how to properly manage the water levels in your battery can help ensure the life of your battery and help you avoid catastrophic battery failure.”

Your body is like a battery. You need to keep it charged. Dehydration, or not having enough water in your system, is one of the top causes of feeling fatigued.

Drinking water has many benefits. It can flush toxins out of your system, improve your mood, your digestion, and keep headaches at bay.

To stay supercharged all day, drink more water to keep your battery going!

5. Stoke the Flow

Have you ever been so engrossed in your work that you forgot what time it is or have felt that feeling of being in the zone?

That’s being in the “flow state.” The flow state occurs when your energy is focused, leading to increased productivity and the feeling of greater satisfaction in your work.

How do you get into the “flow state?”

By doing tasks that you love first, by avoiding distractions, and enjoying yourself in the process (for example, listening to music while you work). Stoke the flow to feel happier in your work (and life!).

6. Dump the Toxicity

If you feel underappreciated or urndervalued, if your co-workers get on your nerves a lot, or if you have a boss who exhibits poor leadership abilities, you may be working in an environment that’s toxic for you.

What can you do to feel better?

Stay away from people who drain your energy. Make it a point to establish relationships with positive people.

When you feel drained by someone at work, take a breather. Get outside. Find a park. Hang out in nature for a few minutes. Take a few deep breaths. Visualize all of that toxic energy you’ve absorbed leaving your body. Let it drain out right through the bottoms of your feet and into the earth.

Take your well being seriously. Think about some changes you can make in your career or work environment that can have you feeling more positive throughout your day.

7. Revitalize Your Space

Clear your space. Clear your mind.

A messy desk can contribute to feelings of being overwhelmed. In the ancient Chinese art of placement known as Feng Shui (pronounced, fung shway), clutter represents stagnant energy. Stagnant energy can block your stamina.

A messy desk can make it hard to concentrate and even harder to find things, keeping you from being as productive as you’d like.

Taking a 10-minute time out to clear your desk space can be a metaphor for clearing your mind. A clear mind provides focus and puts you back in control of your environment and your workday.

Get Into Action to Give Your Energy a Boost

Perhaps more than any other factor, staying energized at work translates into being successful by staying on top of your game.

Outside forces, like what someone dumps on your desk, or how a co-worker behaves, can make it seem like the world is conspiring to sap your energy and to take away control of your destiny.

It’s really the other way around. You deserve to be energized and productive every day. And, you can be in control of your well being and your environment.

By noticing when your tank is getting low and taking some small actions to boost your energy, you can get your oomph back, stay energized at work, get more done, and be more successful (in your work and your life!).
